In partnership with local artist Kate McGloughlin and the Ulster County Historical Society, Courtney will be facilitating a powerful conversation about the impact of family history and how it shapes our lives on June 24, 2023.
Leaving Bishop Falls: An Ashokan Story is running May 13 through October 29 at UCHS in Kingston, NY.
The work of artist Kate McGloughlin, a 12th generation county resident, captures the sense of loss her family still carries from the seizure of Bishop Falls. Construction of the Ashokan Reservoir, part of New York City's water system, flooded communities long established in the Esopus Valley.
Kate's kin, and many like them, were forcibly removed from their land at Bishop Falls. Kate's painting and printmaking tells the story of her people, acknowledging their loss and finding solace in the beauty of the Ashokan landscape.
The exhibit asks us to reflect on our own family stories and how they resonate in our lives today.
I will be facilitating a round table discussion, and holding compassionate space, for those stories on June 24th. The event will be held 10am - 11:30am and is free with UCHS admission ($15 adults, $5 for students and seniors. Free for members).
Visit the exhibit during UCHS open hours: Friday - Sunday 10am - 4pm. Ulster County Historical Society is located at 2682 Route 209 Kinston, NY 12401.
