Something for your ears...and mind and soul.

Frequently my friends and acquaintances will begin a sentence with “Have you ever seen <insert TV show or movie title here>”, and invariably my answer is almost always “nope”. But I am as equally as likely to hit them back with “Have you ever heard <insert podcast here>?”

Last post I shared a bit about my initiation into mindfulness. This post I am going to share some of the resources that I’ve been utilization as a way of education and instruction. I’ve been an avid consumer of podcasts for a while, especially while commuting and out for a run. These are my favorites that deal with mindfulness, meditation, and Buddhism.

10% Happier Podcast

This podcast is part of a book and an app (neither of which I have read or subscribed to) but I love the guests host Dan Harris brings on the show. Favorite episodes include “Stress Better, Modupe Akinola”, “Inveterate Fretter, Accidental Buddhist, Sylvia Boorstein” “Brene Brown, Vulnerability: The Key to Courage”, and “Mark Epstein, Combining Buddhism with Western Psychotherapy”*.

The Metta Hour Podcast

Sharon Salzberg is one of the co-founders of the Insight Meditation Society and a renowned practitioner of lovingkindness (metta) meditation. I love her. I want to be her friend. Favorite episodes (so far) include Episode 99: Sebene Salessie, Episode 98: Dr. Kristen Neff, and Episode 85: Elisha Goldstein.

On Being with Krista Tippett

I love the way Krista Tippett conducts an interview. While these interviews are not specifically about meditation or Buddhism, there is a deeply spiritual nature to the conversations Tippett has with her guests. My absolute favorite so far is her interview with one of my personal spiritual guides - the late Mary Oliver. More recently, I loved her interview with Esther Perel. Also enjoyable were the episodes with Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, and Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambauch.

Hidden Brain

OK. This NPR podcast has nearly nothing specifically to do with mindfulness or meditation - the focus is much more aligned with Western psychology - but I include it here because it’s exemplary content and I frequently incorporate it into my coaching work and my teaching. Start at this week’s The Empathy Gym and just work your way back.

The Savvy Psychologist

I started listening to these quick hitting episodes when Dr. Ellen Hendriksen was hosting. I had heard her on 10% Happier and loved her message about dealing with social anxiety. She has recently left the show, and the new host Dr. Jade Wu has taken over. (Full disclosure: I have not listened to the new host yet!)

*To back up just a bit, I am also currently reading Mark Epstein’s book Advice Not Given. I’ll be posting again about the meditation and mindfulness books I’ve been reading very soon.
